PRAYER & PRAISE, 9 SEPTEMBER 2020, St. Andrew\u2019s Church<\/strong><\/p>\n

This week we remember the events of 11 September 2001<\/em><\/p>\n

Come God<\/p>\n

Come walk with your people<\/p>\n

for you alone are our strength and glory<\/p>\n

AND WE PUT OUR TRUST IN YOU<\/strong><\/p>\n

Come God<\/p>\n

Come walk behind us, beside us, before us<\/p>\n

for you alone are our shelter and direction<\/p>\n

AND WE PUT OUR TRUST IN YOU<\/strong><\/p>\n

Come seek and find and put us right<\/p>\n

for you alone are the light in our darkness<\/p>\n

Acts 9:19b-31<\/strong><\/p>\n

Saul spent several days with the disciples\u00a0in Damascus.\u00a020\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>At once he began to preach in the synagogues\u00a0that Jesus is the Son of God.\u00a021\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>All those who heard him were astonished and asked, \u201cIsn\u2019t he the man who raised havoc in Jerusalem among those who call on this name?\u00a0And hasn\u2019t he come here to take them as prisoners to the chief priests?\u201d\u00a022\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Yet Saul grew more and more powerful and baffled the Jews living in Damascus by proving that Jesus is the Messiah.<\/p>\n

23\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>After many days had gone by, there was a conspiracy among the Jews to kill him,\u00a024\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>but Saul learned of their plan.\u00a0Day and night they kept close watch on the city gates in order to kill him.\u00a025\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>But his followers took him by night and lowered him in a basket through an opening in the wall.<\/p>\n

26\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>When he came to Jerusalem,\u00a0he tried to join the disciples, but they were all afraid of him, not believing that he really was a disciple.\u00a027\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>But Barnabas\u00a0took him and brought him to the apostles. He told them how Saul on his journey had seen the Lord and that the Lord had spoken to him,\u00a0and how in Damascus he had preached fearlessly in the name of Jesus.\u00a028\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>So Saul stayed with them and moved about freely in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.\u00a029\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>He talked and debated with the Hellenistic Jews,[a<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0but they tried to kill him.\u00a030\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>When the believers\u00a0learned of this, they took him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.<\/p>\n

31\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria\u00a0enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.<\/p>\n

Matthew 4:3-48, Love for Enemies<\/strong><\/p>\n

43\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cYou have heard that it was said, \u2018Love your neighbor[i<\/a>]<\/sup>\u00a0and hate your enemy.\u2019\u00a044\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,\u00a045\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>that you may be children\u00a0of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.\u00a046\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>If you love those who love you, what reward will you get?\u00a0Are not even the tax collectors doing that?\u00a047\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that?48\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.<\/p>\n

We look back on the world as it was 19 years ago, a day before the tragedy of 911.\u00a0 Families eating together, kissing one another hello, having conversations about the day and the people who were busy executing their plan for destruction.<\/p>\n

We commit to you those things we cannot understand.\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n

A time for meditation to ponder that which we do not understand.\u00a0 Open up to Jesus in prayer, your own personal space for weeping and wailing for justice and peace and love to prevail. <\/em><\/p>\n

We pray for the transformation and redemption of those who would kill and maim and hate particularly in the name of religion.<\/p>\n

Father,\u00a0forgive them, for they know not what they do<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Almighty God,
\nwho called your Church to bear witness

\nthrough him who was lifted up on the cross,
