James Chalmers, Oliver Tomkins and some companions were sent to New Guinea by the London Missionary Society. They met their death by martyrdom in 1901. Forty years later, during the Second World War, New Guinea was occupied by the Imperial Japanese Army and Christians were severely persecuted. Among those who died for the faith were two English priests, Vivian Redlich and John Barge, who remained with their people after the invasion of 1942 but were betrayed and beheaded, together with seven Australians and two Papuan evangelists, Leslie Gariadi and\u00a0<strong>Lucian Tapiedi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O Lord, open our lips<br \/>\n<strong>and our mouth shall proclaim your praise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Psalm 145<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>1\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>I will extol you, my God and King,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and bless your name for ever and ever.<br \/>\n<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Every day I will bless you,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and praise your name for ever and ever.<br \/>\n<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Great is the\u00a0Lord, and greatly to be praised;<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>his greatness is unsearchable.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>One generation shall laud your works to another,<br \/>\n<strong>and shall declare your mighty acts.<br \/>\n<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>On the glorious splendour of your majesty,<br \/>\n<strong>and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.<br \/>\n<sup>6\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The might of your awesome deeds shall be proclaimed,<br \/>\n<strong>and I will declare your greatness.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness,<br \/>\n<strong>and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is gracious and merciful,<br \/>\n<strong>slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.<br \/>\n<sup>9\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is good to all,<br \/>\n<strong>and his compassion is over all that he has made.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>All your works shall give thanks to you, O\u00a0Lord,<br \/>\n<strong>and all your faithful shall bless you.<br \/>\n<sup>11\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom,<br \/>\n<strong>and tell of your power,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>to make known to all people your<sup>[<\/sup><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm+145&amp;version=NRSVA&amp;interface=print#fen-NRSVA-16333a\"><sup>a<\/sup><\/a><sup>]<\/sup>\u00a0mighty deeds,<br \/>\n<strong>and the glorious splendour of your<\/strong><strong><sup>[<\/sup><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm+145&amp;version=NRSVA&amp;interface=print#fen-NRSVA-16333b\"><strong><sup>b<\/sup><\/strong><\/a><strong><sup>]<\/sup><\/strong><strong>\u00a0kingdom.<br \/>\n<sup>13\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and your dominion endures throughout all generations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is faithful in all his words,<br \/>\n<strong>and gracious in all his deeds.<\/strong><strong><sup>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm+145&amp;version=NRSVA&amp;interface=print#fen-NRSVA-16334c\">c<\/a>]<\/sup><\/strong><strong><br \/>\n<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0upholds all who are falling,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and raises up all who are bowed down.<br \/>\n<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The eyes of all look to you,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and you give them their food in due season.<br \/>\n<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>You open your hand,<br \/>\n<strong>satisfying the desire of every living thing.<br \/>\n<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is just in all his ways,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>and kind in all his doings.<br \/>\n<sup>18\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0is near to all who call on him,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>to all who call on him in truth.<br \/>\n<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>He fulfils the desire of all who fear him;<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>he also hears their cry, and saves them.<br \/>\n<sup>20\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0watches over all who love him,<br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>but all the wicked he will destroy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>My mouth will speak the praise of the\u00a0Lord,<br \/>\n<strong>and all flesh will bless his holy name for ever and ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Glory to the Father and to the Son<br \/>\nand to the Holy Spirit;<br \/>\nas it was in the beginning is now<br \/>\nand shall be for ever.
